Spa care in the Czech Republic has a long tradition. Spa care has always been built on modern medical practices and scientific knowledge about the effects of natural medicinal resources.

Mariánské Lázně is an example of this approach to spa care. In the past it was the seat of the Research Balneological Institute, the largest authority in this field in the Czech Republic. At present a similar role is performed by the workplace of the Institute of Spa Medicine of the 1st Medical Faculty of Charles University in Prague. Under the Charles University in Mariánské Lázně also fall bachelor studies of physiotherapy aimed at balneotherapy, where future experts are studying the spa treatment.
